Gordon Elliott: My Saturday runners at Leopardstown

After a profitable trip to Musselburgh earlier in the week, Gordon has just two runners at home this weekend but he’s hoping to collect some prize-money with both. Read his thoughts on them here.

The Four by Four column: A quartet of English football selections

Every weekend, four of betting.Betfair’s football writers will contribute one selection each from the top four leagues in English football, giving you, the readers, an exciting Multiple option.

Australian Open Final: Djokovic to dominate the side markets

Most aces, set betting and tie breaks – there’s plenty of value to be found in the side markets. Jack Houghton has rifled through the stats to bring you a few of the best wagers to be had from the Nadal v Djokovic showdown.

JAN 28: FIVE TO FOLLOW

FA CUP ties add a different dimension to this weekend’s card with team selection vital before settling on certain sides.

As the tournament goes on clubs should put more emphasis on a run and I’m looking at a couple of sides who would welcome an extended stay in the tournament.

So let’s start the line with Stevenage who should be boosted by the appointment of former Arsenal coach Gary Smith as successor to Graham Westley.

Stevenage hammered MK Dons 4-2 in midweek while Notts County couldn’t break down a poor Preston side at home.

County won 2-0 in League One when the sides met earlier in the season but I reckon this will go the other way.

Stevenage have lost just once since Westley left for Preston so aren’t missing as much as most people predicted. They are a best 21-20 with William Hill against a side with one victory in seven.

I also like the look of Blackpool against Sheffield Wednesday. Ian Holloway’s men have added strength in the window and are unbeaten in four, during which time they’ve hit 12 goals.

Wednesday won in midweek and knocked West Ham, albeit a weakened one, in the last round but crucially failed to score at home to Charlton so may struggle against Blackpool’s better quality. The Tangerines are 10-11 at BetVictor.

Huddersfield have won three in a row to get their promotion push back on track. They travel to Tranmere, who haven’t won in five, and Jordan Rhodes and co should pick up the points. Huddersfield are 1-1 with the likes of BetVictor and Betfred.

Another side who have won three on the bounce after a blip are Wimbledon. They tackle an Aldershot outfit who have been firing blanks with no goals in six games.

Wimbledon usually concede so Shots could end their drought but after eight in three games the home side will expect to hit the target. They are a biggest 6-4 at BetVictor.

Complete the line in Scotland where it’s impossible to see past Second Division Cowdenbeath as they bid to bounce back from last week’s defeat at Forfar.

Albion Rovers have lost five in row, only scoring in a 6-1 defeat at Arbroath, and have completely lost their way. Beath are a biggest 1-2 at Paddy Power.

Boylesports.com Hurdle Day At Leopardstown – We’ve Got It ‘Covered’ With Saturday’s Tips

Four consecutive pivotal weekends lie in wait as the Cheltenham Festival draws ever closer, and here in Leopardstown tonight there’ll be more than a couple of owners dreaming of heading to Gloucestershire in mid-March with a tilt at weekend Festival sponsor Boylesports’ 100,000 euro bonus still intact – that’s a cash incentive put up by the County Meath firm for any horse taking Saturday’s feature handicap hurdle (2.45pm live on RTE2) that goes on to taste victory in any race at Cheltenham itself.

It’s no wonder plenty are keen at getting their hands on the dough; just 12 months ago Final Approach saw off Call The Police in a Leopardstown one-two for Willie Mullins, and then went on to Cheltenham to land the County Hurdle off a mark of 139 in the hands of Ruby Walsh.

A little further back you only need to turn the pages to 2003 to find Xenophon also getting the job done, with a win in the Coral Cup supplementing success at the Foxrock track.

History lesson over – who’s it going to be that lands the spoils in 2012?

With 30 horses set to line up we’re not exactly short on options, and it makes sense to bet with the firms doing the decent thing and offering punters the extra place each way, namely Bet365, Betfred, Boylesports, Paddy Power or Skybet.

Bookmakers think the key piece of form came over course and distance at the Christmas meeting when Adrian Murray’s Cass Bligh saw off Citizenship, Scottish Boogie and Cothrom Na Feinne among others (all four run again).

On the back of that Charles Byrnes’ charge Scottish Boogie finds himself the 7/1 clear market leader after being hit with just a two pound rise, but it inevitably means there’s value to be had elsewhere in the race, and the one I thought worth taking out of that aforementioned piece of form was the fourth placed Cothrom Na Feinne.

He was having only his second run back from a long layoff that day and nearly made all under John Cullen, eventually beaten four lengths.

Jockey Tom Doyle has been among the winners this week, scoring aboard Burrenbridge Lodge at Gowran Park on Thursday afternoon, and he takes over in the saddle here on a horse who could easily figure under a light weight at odds of 20/1 with Paddy Power.

What a story it would be for his veteran trainer Des McDonogh if he could land this; he was responsible for the great Monksfield back in the day, and it’d be great to see him hit the headlines once again.

Surely Cothrom Na Feinne would be shorter if trained by a more fashionable yard?

The other one I like is also a huge price, and in Willie Mullins’ Quiscover Fontaine we can back a lightly weighted, in-form, recent course and distance winner, who’ll love the ground and benefits from a hurdles mark (126) significantly lower than his chase rating (142).

He dug deep to see off the re-opposing group of Pires, Dur Ar An Ol, Wilde Wit Pleasure And Beau Michael in a race he was very much entitled to win at the weights at Christmas time, but that confidence booster will have done him a world of good, and it’s not hard to see why Mullins has put his chasing career on hold while he can compete from a mark more than a stone lower over the smaller obstacles.

The winner of four of his seven starts over hurdles Quiscover Fontaine deserves respect, especially with in-form David Casey up top bidding to add to his impressive Thyestes Chase success on On His Own for Mullins on Thursday afternoon.

Casey proved his versatility with a win on the Flat last week, winning a maiden on Charlie Swan’s Prince Of Fire at Dundalk.

It’d be no surprise to see his mount here outperform a quote of 25/1 from Boylesports.

At Cheltenham, aside from the silent battle to see who can don the most garish pair of corduroy trousers (lime and mustard are personal favourites), there’s also the small matter of a mighty day’s racing, and sticking with the big price theme I’m having a few quid each way on the moody but talented Tartak in Channel 4′s first live race at 2.05pm.

Almost everything else in the race has better recent form claims, not least improver Aerial, but Tartak didn’t come to be rated 159 by accident, and as a previous course and distance winner who’s been competing at the top table for a long time he’s entitled to be in the mix if he can bring his ‘A’ game to the table.

The blinkers which made him sulk like a reluctant schoolboy in the Peterborough Chase are unsurprisingly dispensed with, and if his recent wind op has had a positive effect then 16/1 could be a monster price.

Lest we forget this is a horse who’s been placed in 13 of his 25 chases, is still only nine years of age, and has a handy racing weight (11.3) due to the presence of Poquelin.

Yes it is a leap of faith, but one that can hopefully be fully justified by an improved showing.

Back him each way at 16′s with any of Boylesports, Paddy Power or Victor Chandler.

In the valuable 3m 1f Argento Chase at 2.35pm I’m far from convinced Arkle winner Captain Chris is going to see out this extended trip, and although dangers appear throughout the field via the fragile Diamond Harry, enigmatic Tidal Bay (placed in this a year ago) and Cheltenham lover Midnight Chase, the one to carry my cash is Paul Webber’s Time For Rupert in the hands of Denis O’Regan.

He’s a very thorough stayer, proven on the track, who won his first two starts over fences and bounced back to form in emphatic style in a lesser race at Newbury latest.

In my eyes he’s the one they all have to beat, and the 7/2 with William Hill is fair.

There are some very good young horses on display in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at 3.10pm, chief among them favourite Broadbackbob.

He has looked very smart in two starts for Nicky Henderson, beating subsequent three time winner Cinders And Ashes at Ascot on his debut for the stable, before winning in little more than a canter at Newbury in December.

He has to concede weight to most of these, but it’ll take a good one to lower his colours, and you’d imagine Andrew Tinkler will be enjoying this opportunity with Barry Geraghty busy at Doncaster.

Broadbackbob looks a solid option at 7/4 with Betfred, Ladbrokes or Victor Chandler.

Lastly, one for Twitter follower Zack Gascoigne who’s off to Donny tomorrow and needs a winner. (follow me @TomsTips)

I thought Corkage could follow up his recent wins back over hurdles in the 2.20pm for Reveleys Keith and James.

Predictably the handicapper has done him no favours (up 12 to 127 over hurdles) after two recent successes, but his course and distance win over timber was supplemented by an easy success over fences at Southwell, and in the form of his life he’ll be hard to peg back.

The 5/2 with Skybet or Bet365 looks reasonable.

Good luck!

Saturday’s best bets from Cheltenham, Doncaster and Leopardstown:

2.05 Cheltenham – Murphy Group Chase (Handicap) – 3 Tartak (each way) @ 16/1 ( BoylesportsPaddy Power or Victor Chandler)

ENGLAND: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

IT’S FA Cup weekend and I’ll start the line with a couple of knockout games.

First up it’s Leicester v Swindon with Paolo di Canio’s men looking to produce another shock after beating Wigan in the previous round.

A couple of weeks ago you’d have fancied the League Two men but successive wins against Nottm Forest (4-0 in a cup replay) and at Southampton (2-0) have raised spirits around Leicester.

However, Forest are the only side of the last five visitors not to score at the Walker’s so high-flying Swindon will at least fancy their chances of grabbing one.

Next it’s a fairly obvious call with West Brom v Norwich. It was 2-1 Norwich when the sides met in the league a couple of weeks ago but the Baggies were mugged.

They’ll be looking for revenge and with both sides seemingly safe from a drop battle the line-ups shouldn’t be too different.

Norwich usually concede – last week’s was their first clean sheet of the season – but they also score their fair share.

Next try Peterborough v Portsmouth in the Championship. It was 3-2 Boro at Fratton Park earlier in the campaign while Boro also lost 3-2 at Cardiff last week and have conceded eight in three games.

Peterborough games aren’t as action-packed as they used to be but I can see both scoring here.

In League Two Hartlepool and Carlisle fans will be hoping for plenty of thrills and spills.

Hartlepool are getting better under new boss Neale Cooper and have netted in five of their last six games while Carlisle’s last six have seen both teams score, with a total of 24 goals in them.

Finish off the fivefold with Braintree v Barrow in the Blue Square Premier. I’d gone off Braintree for a bit but they’re back in favour after four successive games with both scoring.

They even netted the opener at leaders Fleetwood on Tuesday before losing a man and going down 3-1. Barrow, who killed my Super Single with a last-gasp equaliser against Grimsby, have been involved in games which have produced 22 in their last five so let’s hope for more of the same.

SCOTLAND: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

I COULD have started with Ayr v Killie in the League Cup semi-final – but I’ll leave it out because I know you guys don’t like me including the early one.

There should be goals in that Ayrshire derby at Hampden and I reckon it will be a cracking contest.

Anyway, my line starts with Hamilton v Raith Rovers in the Scottish First Division. Both sides had decent 2-2 draws last week and the two previous meetings this season have been 2-2 and 3-2 Hamilton.

Stay in the First Division and go for Queen of the South v Morton. The sides have a bit of history and their games always seem to produce goals.

There have have been nine in the two clashes this season and both teams have scored in seven of the last eight meetings between the sides. Queens drew 2-2 at Livi last week and Morton will be raring to go after their match at Ross County was called off.

Now it’s down to Division Two and Brechin v Arbroath. We were right to say Arbroath would get back on track last week after the distraction of their Scottish Cup tie against Rangers.

With temporary signing Collin Samuel on board they hammered Albion Rovers 6-1 and will be looking to hit the goal trail again at Glebe Park.

Both sides scored in the earlier two meetings this season and Brechin’s failure to net at Dumbarton last week was their first blank in seven games.

Two form sides meet at Station Park as Dumbarton visit Forfar. The Son have won their last three games with last-minute goals and should hit the target again.

Forfar are unbeaten in three, scoring six and beating leaders Cowdenbeath at home into the bargain. This should be a thriller with plenty of goals.

Complete the fivefold with a Third Division clash between Alloa and Montrose. Paul Hartley’s Alloa have been steadily improving and last week’s 4-0 win at Stranraer was sensational.

However, they are unlikely to get as easy against a Montrose side who have netted in their last six but conceded in five of them.

The two meetings this season saw both sides score and this should be a third with Alloa having netted 13 in five outings.

JAN 28: SFL TREBLE

PUNTERS up and down the country will be looking to end January with a winning line – so let’s hope this weekend’s SFL treble comes up trumps.

We don’t have a full card to play with because of League Cup semi-final fixtures but that shouldn’t stop us from giving the bookies a bashing.

We start off in the Irn-Bru Second Division and focus on Arbroath’s trip to face Brechin.

After a disappointing run of results the Gayfield men bounced back to winning ways in spectacular fashion last weekend as they thumped Albion Rovers 6-1.

They will be looking to keep their promotion push on track this weekend as they square up to a Brechin side they have defeated in three of the last four meetings between the clubs.

Arbroath go into this one 12 points ahead of their hosts and I reckon they can extend that gap even further.

Take an away win for Arbroath as the first side in our SFL treble at 6-4 with Bet365.

We stay in the Second Division and concentrate on Cowdenbeath’s home clash with Albion Rovers.

Beath proudly top the table and go into this match a massive 20 points ahead of the Cliftonhill men.

Despite a disappointing run of results in recent weeks the Blue Brazil have defeated Rovers in the last six clashes between the clubs – I am taking them to go seven up this weekend.  Go for a Cowdenbeath triumph at 1-2 with Skybet.

We finish up in the Third Division and one of my top tips this season – Stranraer.  After a great run of results the Blues crashed back down to earth last weekend as they were thrashed 4-0 at home to title rivals Alloa.

But they can recover from last week’s disappointment by running out winners over this weekend’s visitors to Stair Park, Elgin.  Stranraer have won three of the last four meetings between the sides and I think they can edge a hard-fought encounter this weekend.

Take Stranraer as the final team in this weekend’s SFL treble at 5-6 with Coral.

For those of you looking for a safer treble, Alloa to win at home to Montrose (6-10, William Hill), Annan at home to East Stirling (4-11, widely available) and Cowdenbeath (1-2, Skybet), looks tempting but won’t pays a biggest £31.70 to a £10 stake at Coral.

JUNIORS TIPSTER CONTEST: WEEK 24

OUR junior tipsters are still waiting to break their trebles duck in 2012 – but this could be the week weather permitting.

Paul Petrie of McBookie.com and Owen Scott of William Hill have been going head to head all season with Paul leading the challenge on £264.35 and Owen chasing hard on £184.16 after landing a single last week with his other two selections postponed. Here’s what they’re going for this weekend.

Paul writes: The weather has been a nightmare over the past few weeks so hopefully we will get a few games on. It is making it hard to judge current form though – or at least that is my excuse.

First up I am going for Petershill to beat Beith. We have them as slight favourites despite last week’s home defeat by Clydebank while I see Owen has the prices the opposite way around. That means I think the 6-4 on offer represents good value.

Next up is Dyce Juniors to beat Sunnybank. I have got my fingers burned over the past few weeks with these shorties so hats off to Owen but our 1-6 compared to his 1-2 is such a big difference it has to be backed.

Finally, we are the official match ball sponsor at the Carnoustie v Bo’ness game so it would be rude not to include that game in my treble. I am on the away team at Owen’s 2-5 – with us it’s 1-3.

Treble pays £35 with McBookie.com to a £10 stake, £52.50 at William Hill

Owen writes:

Only one of my matches, Auchinleck Talbot, survived last week but at least they beat Musselburgh to give me a small profit on the day.

Two of the games I chose last week are scheduled again for this weekend so I’ll take them. First it’s Larkhall at 10-11 at home to Bellshill in the Emirates Scottish Cup.

I still reckon home advantage will be crucial in this battle between the two Central First Division sides

Next up are Hill of Beath at 8-13 against Camelon in a Super League match. The Fife side have one eye on the title this season so will be looking for three points which will keep them in the mix.

My final selection are Beith at 5-4 at home to Super League leaders Petershill.  A home win would really open up the title race up and reckon Petershill will follow last week’s defeat by Clydebank by losing again.
